3 Days in Destin: The Perfect Long Weekend Itinerary

8 min read ยท July 1, 2025

Three days in Destin is enough to see what all the fuss is about โ€” the water, the fishing, Henderson Beach, Harborwalk Village, and the best seafood on the Gulf Coast. Here's how to spend a long weekend without wasting a minute of it.

Before You Arrive

Destin rewards a little planning, especially in peak season:

  • Book accommodations well ahead โ€” Gulf-front condos book up 3โ€“6 months ahead in summer; shoulder season (May, October) you can often book 3โ€“4 weeks out
  • Consider Miramar Beach for your base โ€” same water, same beach access, typically 10โ€“15% cheaper than the Destin zip code
  • Book a fishing charter in advance โ€” the best half-day and full-day boats fill up, especially in summer and October (Fishing Rodeo month)
  • Get to the beach early โ€” Destin's public beach parking fills by 9am on summer weekends; Henderson Beach State Park can sell out before 10am

Day 1: Arrival, First Look at the Water, Harborwalk Evening

Afternoon: Henderson Beach State Park

Your first beach day in Destin should be at Henderson Beach State Park. The 208-acre park has the best beach in Destin โ€” protected old-growth coastal dunes behind you, that famous emerald water in front of you, no condo towers in view. This is where you get your first real look at the Destin water color that everyone talks about.

Spend 2โ€“3 hours at Henderson on arrival day โ€” enough time to settle in, swim, and let the water color actually sink in. If you arrive before 2pm, this is your first stop. If you arrive later, check in first and come back Day 2 morning when you can do it full justice.

Evening: Harborwalk Village

Destin Harbor at sunset is the ideal first-night experience. Harborwalk Village has everything in one walkable waterfront area: sunset cruises, live music, restaurant options at every price point, and the spectacle of fishing boats coming back to dock. If you're here in October, the Fishing Rodeo weigh-ins happen at the dock every evening โ€” massive fish, excited crowds, excellent atmosphere.

Dinner options at the Harbor: Boshamps Seafood (excellent grilled fish, views of the harbor), AJ's Seafood (lively, great raw bar), or Marina Cafe for a more upscale sit-down with Gulf views.

Day 2: Fishing or Full Beach Day

Option A: Go Fishing

If fishing is any part of your trip interest, Day 2 morning is for a charter. Destin has the largest private charter fleet in the US โ€” options range from 4-hour inshore trips (redfish, speckled trout, flounder in the bays โ€” great for beginners and families) to full-day offshore trips (red snapper, grouper, amberjack โ€” for serious anglers).

Half-day boats leave at 7:30am and 1:30pm. Morning trips are generally better โ€” calmer water, more active fish. Book a few weeks ahead in summer, or check for last-minute availability in shoulder season.

Option B: Full Beach Day on Scenic Gulf Drive

If you're not fishing, spend Day 2 as a full beach day along Scenic Gulf Drive or back at Henderson Beach. The main difference between the beaches: Henderson is wilder and more natural; the Scenic Gulf Drive beach is more developed with beach chair rentals and concessions easily accessible.

Morning swim (water is at its calmest and the color is most vivid in morning light), beach lunch from a nearby cafe, afternoon in the water or under an umbrella. This is what you came for โ€” don't over-schedule it.

Evening: The Wharf or Local Dining

The Wharf in Orange Beach is 20 minutes east โ€” a large waterfront entertainment complex with good dinner restaurants, a Ferris wheel, and live music. Alternatively, stay closer to Destin and try Donut Hole (a Destin institution for casual dining), or drive up to Fort Walton Beach for a quieter waterfront dinner at a fraction of the Destin prices.

Day 3: Water Activity Morning, Nature Trail, Head Home

Morning: One More Water Activity

Day 3 morning is for an activity you haven't done yet:

  • Dolphin cruise โ€” morning tours are calmer and often produce the best sightings; the Gulf is glass-smooth most mornings in summer
  • Kayak or paddleboard rental โ€” the calm morning Gulf or the protected bay waters are ideal; several rental outfitters operate on the beach
  • Snorkeling at Jetty East โ€” the rock jetty east of the pass attracts fish and is the best nearshore snorkeling in the Destin area
  • Parasailing โ€” morning is the best time; altitude views of the emerald water from 400โ€“800 feet up are genuinely jaw-dropping

Midday: Henderson Beach Nature Trail

If you're not leaving until afternoon, spend 45 minutes on Henderson Beach State Park's nature trail before you go. The trail winds through old-growth sand pine scrub โ€” an ecosystem that's increasingly rare on the developed Gulf Coast. It's quiet, shaded, and a completely different experience from the beach. A good sendoff before the drive home.

3-Day Destin Budget Estimate
