Best Things to Do in Gulf Shores, AL

Gulf Shores is much more than a beach town. Yes, the white sand and warm Gulf water are spectacular โ€” but the area packs in state parks, world-class fishing, water parks, live music, and some of the best seafood restaurants in the South. Here's the full activity guide from someone who knows it well.

The Beach (Obviously)

Start here. Gulf Shores Public Beach is the main access point โ€” wide, clean, and well-maintained with lifeguards in summer. Parking fills up fast on peak summer weekends, so arrive by 9am or use the trolley service from nearby lots.

For a better beach experience with fewer people, head east into Gulf State Park. The park's 2.5 miles of protected shoreline has the same sugar-white sand and none of the umbrella chaos. The state park requires a small entry fee but it's worth every penny โ€” sea turtle nesting areas, dune boardwalks, and room to breathe.

Gulf State Park โ€” More Than Just Beach

Gulf State Park deserves its own section because it's genuinely one of the best state parks in the Southeast โ€” not just the best beach park. The 6,150-acre park includes:

  • 28 miles of trails โ€” paved and unpaved, through coastal scrub, pine flatwoods, and freshwater lakes. Mountain bikers and hikers both have dedicated trails.
  • Lake Shelby โ€” a gorgeous freshwater lake inside the park, popular for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Completely different vibe from the Gulf side.
  • Gulf State Park Pier โ€” one of the longest piers on the Gulf Coast at 1,540 feet. Open year-round for fishing; no license required on the pier. Excellent for catching pompano, Spanish mackerel, and redfish.
  • Campgrounds and glamping cabins โ€” the Lodge at Gulf State Park is a full-service resort hotel inside the park with access to all park trails and beach.

Fishing

Gulf Shores and neighboring Orange Beach together make up one of the most productive inshore and offshore fishing areas on the Gulf Coast. Options range from pier fishing (free, no license required) to full-day offshore trips targeting amberjack, red snapper, grouper, and mahi-mahi.

  • Pier fishing โ€” Gulf State Park Pier and the public fishing pier at Gulf Place are both excellent
  • Inshore charters โ€” half-day trips targeting redfish, speckled trout, and flounder in the bays and passes
  • Offshore charters โ€” full-day and multi-day trips out of Orange Beach Marina targeting snapper, grouper, and tuna
  • Alabama Gulf Coast deep-sea fleet โ€” the Orange Beach charter fleet rivals Destin's in size and quality

Water Sports & Beach Activities

The Gulf off Gulf Shores is warm (75โ€“85ยฐF in summer), calm most mornings, and perfect for almost every water activity imaginable:

  • Parasailing โ€” multiple operators on the beach; views from 400โ€“800 feet up are genuinely spectacular
  • Jet ski and waverunner rentals โ€” available right on the beach, ideal for the calm morning Gulf
  • Kayaking and paddleboarding โ€” the protected waters of Little Lagoon and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway are great for beginners
  • Dolphin cruises โ€” bottlenose dolphins are abundant year-round in the Gulf; sunset dolphin cruises are a highlight for families
  • Snorkeling โ€” the Gulf isn't known for reef diving, but the Gulf State Park Pier pilings attract fish and offer the best nearshore snorkeling in the area

Waterville USA

Gulf Shores' water park is legitimately good โ€” 20 water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and a full amusement park section with go-karts and mini golf. It's been operating since 1986 and keeps adding attractions. On a hot August day with kids, this is a full day well spent. Located right on Highway 59 heading into Gulf Shores.

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

This one surprises people. The Gulf Shores zoo โ€” sometimes called "The Little Zoo That Could" after it survived three major hurricanes โ€” has evolved into a genuinely excellent small zoo with lemurs, tigers, kangaroos, and over 500 animals. The "Wild Encounters" program lets you get up close with multiple species. Great for a half-day, especially if you need a break from the beach.

Historic Fort Morgan

At the far western tip of the Gulf Shores peninsula, Fort Morgan is a remarkably well-preserved Civil War-era fort with commanding views of Mobile Bay. The fort played a key role in the Battle of Mobile Bay (1864) โ€” where Admiral Farragut allegedly said "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead." The adjacent beach and state park land is among the least-visited, most beautiful coastline in Alabama. Worth the 30-minute drive from Gulf Shores proper.

Dining & Nightlife

Gulf Shores has a legitimate food scene built almost entirely around fresh Gulf seafood. A few highlights:

  • The Hangout โ€” the iconic beach bar on the main strip; live music, foam parties on weekends, and solid Gulf seafood. Tourist-y but fun.
  • Gulf Shores Steamer โ€” no-frills seafood boil; shrimp, crab, and crawfish by the pound. Local favorite.
  • In the Same Boat โ€” a newer, more upscale option with excellent fresh catch and a great craft cocktail list
  • Tacky Jack's โ€” waterfront tiki bar atmosphere with live music; best sunset views in the area
  • Lulu's โ€” Jimmy Buffett's sister Lucy's waterfront restaurant in nearby Orange Beach; enormous, lively, great for families

Live Events & Festivals

  • Hangout Music Festival (May) โ€” three-day music festival on the beach with national headliners; one of the best beach music festivals in the country
  • National Shrimp Festival (October) โ€” four days of Gulf shrimp, live music, and arts and crafts on the beach; massive local event drawing 250,000+ visitors
  • Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Food & Wine Festival (March) โ€” multi-venue culinary event highlighting Gulf seafood and regional cuisine

Day Trips from Gulf Shores

  • Orange Beach โ€” 10 minutes east; upscale marinas, more restaurant options, same beautiful beach
  • Mobile, AL โ€” 45 minutes north; historic downtown, USS Alabama battleship memorial, and Mardi Gras (the original American one)
  • Pensacola Beach โ€” 1 hour east; Gulf Islands National Seashore and the Naval Aviation Museum
  • Dauphin Island โ€” 30 minutes west by ferry (seasonal); the most secluded beach on the Alabama coast
