Gulf Coast Beach from Memphis: Everything You Need to Know

7 min read Β· June 1, 2025

Memphis to Gulf Shores is 6 hours β€” longer than Nashville or Atlanta, but still a completely driveable beach trip. Plenty of Memphis families make it a regular summer destination. Here's the best way to do it, where to stop, and which beach to head for.

How Far Is Memphis from the Gulf Coast?

Memphis to Gulf Shores is roughly 390 miles and takes about 5.5–6.5 hours depending on traffic and stops. The drive is almost entirely on US-78 and I-22 through Mississippi, then I-65 South into Gulf Shores. It's not a quick beach run, but for a 4–5 day trip it's very manageable β€” especially with a Friday afternoon departure that lets you sleep at the beach.

  • Memphis to Gulf Shores, AL β€” ~390 miles, ~6 hours
  • Memphis to Pensacola Beach, FL β€” ~430 miles, ~6.5 hours
  • Memphis to Destin, FL β€” ~480 miles, ~7 hours
  • Memphis to Panama City Beach, FL β€” ~540 miles, ~7.5 hours

Gulf Shores is the clear sweet spot for Memphis travelers β€” closest, easiest, and still genuinely excellent white-sand Gulf beaches.

The Best Route: Memphis to Gulf Shores

Main Route: US-78 / I-22 β†’ I-65 South (Recommended)

Distance: ~390 miles Β |Β Time: 5.5–6 hours

  • Take US-78 / I-22 East from Memphis toward Birmingham
  • At Birmingham, connect to I-65 South toward Montgomery and Mobile
  • Follow I-65 South through Montgomery and into Mobile
  • Take the Baldwin Beach Express (Highway 59) south into Gulf Shores

The Birmingham connection adds a small amount of distance but uses the best roads. Most Memphis GPS routes suggest this path. Alternatively, US-72 through northern Alabama is slightly more scenic but adds time.

Alternate Route: Through Mississippi Gulf Coast

Distance: ~400 miles Β |Β Time: 6.5–7 hours

Head south from Memphis on US-61 or I-55 through Jackson, Mississippi, then east on I-10 to Mobile and south to Gulf Shores. This route adds time but passes through the Mississippi Gulf Coast (Biloxi, Gulfport, Bay St. Louis) β€” worth considering if you want to break the trip into two days with a Biloxi overnight.

Which Beach Is Right for a Memphis Trip?

Gulf Shores & Orange Beach β€” Best Value, Easiest Drive

For most Memphis families, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are the destination. They sit right at the end of I-65 β€” no additional navigation required. White sand, warm clear Gulf water, Gulf State Park, great seafood restaurants, and plenty of activities for all ages.

A 4-night trip (Friday evening to Tuesday morning) gives you three full beach days, which is ideal for a 6-hour drive. You're not going to make this trip for just 2 nights.

Pensacola Beach β€” Worth the Extra Hour

Add an hour east of Gulf Shores and you reach Pensacola Beach β€” Gulf Islands National Seashore, the whitest quartz sand on the entire Gulf Coast, and the National Naval Aviation Museum (free, genuinely world-class). For a 5–7 day trip, Pensacola Beach offers a richer experience and slightly lower prices than Destin.

Destin β€” The Emerald Water Upgrade

At 7 hours from Memphis, Destin is a longer commitment but delivers the most dramatic Gulf water color on the coast. Best for trips of 5+ days. If you're going to drive 7 hours, stay long enough to make it worth it.

When to Make the Memphis–Gulf Shores Drive

  • Memorial Day weekend β€” a Memphis classic. Book 3–4 months ahead for Gulf-front condos. Traffic Friday afternoon on I-65 south of Birmingham can be heavy.
  • Fourth of July week β€” peak crowds and prices, but the atmosphere on the beach is electric. Book early and commit.
  • Late August β€” families back in school, water at peak warmth (84–86Β°F), significant price drops. The ideal late-summer window for Memphis travelers.
  • October β€” the move most people haven't discovered yet. 74–78Β°F water, 25–35% lower prices, zero crowds. The full October guide makes the case. For a 6-hour drive, the off-season savings are particularly compelling.

Packing for a 6-Hour Beach Drive

A 6-hour drive means you can fit a lot in the car β€” there's no real reason to skip the heavy beach gear. Bring your own chairs and umbrella (saves $40–60/day in beach rentals), a full cooler, and a soft-sided bag for snacks and car entertainment.
