Destin eats a lot better once you stop treating HarborWalk as the whole map. The harbor has genuinely good food on it, but it also has the highest concentration of tourist-priced mediocrity in the city — and the places locals actually repeat are spread across four distinct areas, some of them a ten-minute drive from the boardwalk.
This is organized by where you are staying rather than by ranking, because in summer traffic the question is never “what is the best restaurant in Destin.” It is “what is worth the drive from here, tonight, with these people.”
How We Picked
Places that repeat visitors and locals keep going back to, that survive a summer without collapsing on service, and that are honest about what they are. A view can justify a once-per-trip visit at a place where the food is fine — we will say so when that is the deal rather than pretending otherwise.
What is not here: chains you have at home, and harbor spots that coast entirely on foot traffic.
Destin Harbor and HarborWalk
The harbor is the postcard: boats coming in, the pass behind them, the whole World's Luckiest Fishing Village thing. Worth doing once. Park once and walk.
Dewey Destin's
The one to send people to first. It is a working seafood house with a dock, paper-and-plastic service, and fish that came off a boat rather than a truck. Not fancy, not trying to be, and that is exactly why it works. The Destin family has been in the fishing business here for generations, which shows in what ends up on the plate.
Boshamps Seafood & Oyster House
Waterfront on the harbor with a proper oyster bar and a deck that earns its reputation at sunset. This is the harbor pick when you want the view and the food to both hold up — a step up in polish from the dockside places without turning into a special-occasion bill.
Brotula's Seafood House & Steamer
Right on the boardwalk, steamer pots, Gulf seafood done straightforwardly. The best combination on HarborWalk of “we are standing where the tourists are” and “this is actually good.” Expect a wait in season.
Harbor Docks
A local institution and the harbor's odd duck: a seafood restaurant with a genuinely serious sushi operation attached, plus breakfast. They run their own seafood market, which is the reason the fish is what it is. Locals eat here year-round, which is the strongest signal a Destin restaurant can send.
Scenic 98 and the Mid-Bay Corridor
East of the harbor along Scenic Gulf Drive and up toward Mid-Bay, parking stops being a blood sport and the crowd shifts toward people who are staying nearby rather than passing through.
The Back Porch
A Destin fixture and the original char-grilled amberjack place. Right on the sand, open to the Gulf, and it has been doing the same thing well for decades. This is the “beach lunch that turns into three hours” restaurant. Go for the grilled fish and the view; do not go expecting a quiet dinner.
The Crab Trap
Beachfront, family-shaped, and reliable in the way that matters when you have kids covered in sand and nobody wants to change clothes. You can walk off the beach into it. Food is solid rather than remarkable, and the setting does real work.
Toward Miramar Beach and Sandestin

Seagar's Prime Steaks & Seafood
The proper special-occasion room on this stretch — a steakhouse inside the Hilton at Sandestin, jackets-optional but the real thing. This is the anniversary dinner, not the Tuesday.
Grand Boulevard and Baytowne
Both are clusters rather than single restaurants, and both are the pragmatic answer when your group cannot agree. Grand Boulevard skews a little more grown-up; Baytowne Wharf at Sandestin is built around families and events. Neither will be the best meal of your trip. Both will end the argument.

Reservations, Parking, and Timing
- Eat early or late in summer. The 6 to 8 p.m. window on the harbor in July is the worst hour to attempt anything without a reservation.
- Park once on the harbor. Circling for a closer space costs more time than the walk.
- Book the nice places ahead. Seagar's and the other reservation rooms fill days out in season.
- The dockside places do not take reservations. Go at an odd hour instead.
- Shoulder season closes days. January and February hours are not summer hours.
Building the Rest of the Day

The Bottom Line
Do the harbor once for the view, then spend the rest of the week eating where the locals do. Dewey Destin's and Harbor Docks are the two that consistently justify themselves, Boshamps is the best combination of view and food, and The Back Porch is worth a long beach lunch. If you are based east toward Miramar, stay east most nights — the drive into the harbor in August costs more than the meal is worth.
