Henderson Beach State Park is the best beach day in Destin that does not involve a boardwalk, a t-shirt shop, or a wait for a table. It is 208 acres of protected dunes, sea oats, and sugar-white sand right off Emerald Coast Parkway — and as of mid-2026, you cannot just drive up and pay at the gate anymore.

Destin has plenty of public beach accesses, and most of them put you on the same water. What Henderson gives you that they do not is space and dunes. The practical version: bathrooms that work, outdoor rinse showers, covered pavilions, real parking, and lifeguards in season. Those sound mundane until you have spent a morning hunting for a legal spot along Scenic 98 with two kids and a cooler.

Know Before You Go: Fees, Hours, and the Reservation System
Entry runs $6.70 per vehicle. The park keeps standard Florida State Parks hours — 8 a.m. until sundown, 365 days a year.
The reservation requirement arrived in May 2026 to deal with a genuine problem: the entrance line on Emerald Coast Parkway used to back traffic up badly on summer mornings. Booking ahead fixed the queue, but it also means a spontaneous beach afternoon can end at a closed gate. Book the night before at minimum.
When the park is busiest

The Beach, the Boardwalks, and the Dunes
Four boardwalk crossovers run from the parking areas over the dunes to the sand. They exist because dunes are fragile and slow to rebuild — walking over them is both illegal and the reason the park still looks like this. Use the crossovers.
Best access for families
Take the crossovers nearest the main parking area and pavilions. You are close to restrooms, rinse showers, and shade, which matters when someone is three years old and the sand is 140°F. The pavilions can be reserved for groups and go quickly on summer weekends.
Best access for a long walk
Head to the farther crossovers and turn east. The crowd thins fast once you are a few hundred yards from the boardwalks, and you get the version of Destin that existed before the high-rises. Early morning is spectacular here.

Camping at Henderson Beach
The campground has 54 sites taking RVs, trailers, and tents, with electric hookups, drinking water, and a dump station on site. Base rate is $30 per night plus tax, plus a nonrefundable $6.70 reservation fee. RV, cabin, bungalow, boat, and yurt units add a $7 nightly utility fee — tent campers do not pay it.

Dogs, Bikes, and the Rules
The dog rule is the one that disappoints people, so be clear on it before you load the car: leashed dogs are welcome in the campground and on the nature trail, but not on the beach. They are also barred from the playground and all park buildings. Leashes max out at six feet and dogs must be supervised at all times. Service animals are exempt throughout.

Other rules worth knowing: no glass on the beach, no alcohol, pack out what you bring, and fill in any holes you dig. Holes left overnight are a genuine hazard for nesting sea turtles and for people walking in the dark.

Henderson works best as a half-day rather than a whole one. A reliable shape:
- Morning: arrive at opening, take the far crossovers, walk east while it is cool
- Midday: pavilion lunch, or leave before the heat peaks
