Fort Walton Beach has more genuine waterfront than Destin and about a tenth of the attention. Santa Rosa Sound, the bayous, and the Gulf side of Okaloosa Island all have restaurants on them, and because this is a working town rather than a resort strip, the prices are noticeably saner.
The catch is that “waterfront” gets used loosely here, as everywhere. A listing with a distant view across a parking lot is not the same as a deck over the water.

To make it, you have to be on the water — a deck, a dock, or a dining room where the water is the view rather than a detail. Places with good food and no water are not here; places with water and adequate food are, and we say which is which.
On the Bayou
AJ's on the Bayou
The one most locals name first. A casual waterfront spot with an outdoor deck over the bayou, live music most days, and sunsets that genuinely earn the reputation. Shrimp and grits and the po' boy are the dishes people come back for.
This is the archetypal Fort Walton Beach evening: on the water, nobody dressed up, a band playing, and a bill that would be half again as much across the bridge.
On Okaloosa Island
The Gulf
Built from refurbished shipping containers with reclaimed materials throughout, sitting on the bay side of Okaloosa Island. The menu is short and changes, the room is one of the more distinctive on this coast, and the setting does a lot of the work — though the kitchen holds up.

In Town
Red Dot Cevichery & Oyster Bar
A more recent, raw-bar-leaning addition on the Fort Walton Beach side. Ceviche and oysters rather than the standard fried-platter format, which makes it the most interesting eating in town for anyone who has had enough fried grouper for one week.

When to Just Go to Destin Instead
Fort Walton Beach's waterfront list is short. If you want depth — a dozen genuine options, a serious steakhouse, a sushi program — Destin is 15 minutes east and has all of it. Our Destin restaurants guide covers that side, and HarborWalk is the harbor-evening version.
The honest split: eat in Fort Walton Beach for value, atmosphere, and not fighting for parking. Cross to Destin when you want range or a special-occasion room.
Parking and Timing
- Parking is easy here compared with Destin — that is one of the main reasons to eat on this side.
- Sunset seating goes first at the bayou and bay spots. Arrive before the light drops or expect to wait.
- Few of these take reservations. Go early or late in season.
- Decks close in weather, which can halve a restaurant's seating without warning.
An Honest Note
This is a short list on purpose. Fort Walton Beach has plenty of good restaurants that are not on the water, and plenty of waterfront listings that stretch the definition. AJ's on the Bayou for the classic Fort Walton Beach evening on the water, The Gulf on Okaloosa Island for the most distinctive setting, Red Dot when you want something lighter. Park easily, eat well, pay less than Destin — and cross the bridge when you want more choice than this town has.
