Grayton Beach State Park is 2,200 acres on 30A, sitting between Destin and Panama City Beach, and it protects something you cannot see in many places on Earth: a coastal dune lake. Western Lake sits right behind the dunes, fresh water on one side of a sand ridge and the Gulf on the other, occasionally breaking through to meet.
That is the reason to come here rather than to any of the twenty other beach accesses along 30A.
Coastal Dune Lakes, Briefly
A coastal dune lake is a permanent freshwater body separated from the ocean by a narrow band of dune. Periodically the sand barrier breaches and the lake drains to the Gulf, salt water pushes in, and the system resets. The mix of fresh and salt makes them ecologically odd and rare — they exist in only a handful of places worldwide, and South Walton has a concentration of them.
Western Lake is the one inside Grayton Beach State Park, and it is the most accessible example on 30A. You can paddle it, walk beside it, and see the outfall where it meets the beach.
Fees, Parking, and Access
Standard Florida State Parks day-use pricing applies, and it is inexpensive — this is one of the cheapest ways to access a 30A beach, which matters given what parking costs elsewhere along that road.
The park has a proper lot, restrooms, and a boardwalk to the beach. In summer it fills by mid-morning on weekends. Florida State Parks has been rolling out day-use reservations at busy coastal parks, so check whether Grayton requires one before you drive over — the system and which parks it covers have both been changing.
The Beach
Grayton's beach has spent years on national best-beach lists and it earns it: very white quartz sand, tall natural dunes, and — because the park is protected — no buildings behind it. Standing on the sand here you see dunes and sea oats rather than a rental wall, which is increasingly rare anywhere on the Panhandle.
Check the flag conditions. This stretch of coast has real rip currents and there are no lifeguards on most of it.
Trails and the Lake
A short nature trail loops through scrub and pine behind the dunes — about a mile, flat, and worth doing early for birds. Kayaks and paddleboards can go out on Western Lake, and paddling the lake is the single most distinctive thing to do here. It is calm, protected water, which makes it a good option when the Gulf is rough.
Dune etiquette matters more than usual in this park. Stay on the boardwalks and trails — the dunes and the lake edge are the whole reason it is protected, and they recover slowly.
Camping and Cabins
Campsites: $30 per night plus tax, with a $6.70 reservation fee; RVs add a $7 nightly utility fee. Sites have electricity and water, some with sewer hookups.
Cabins: 30 duplex units, each sleeping up to six, with air conditioning, a fireplace, a kitchen, and a heated bathroom. Peak season (February 1–July 31) runs $130 per night or $775 per week; off season (August 1–January 31) is $110 per night or $705 per week.

Nearby on 30A

Half-Day and Full-Day Plans
Half day: arrive at opening, walk the nature trail while it is cool, then beach until lunch. Out before the lot fills and the heat peaks.
Full day: add a paddle on Western Lake in the late afternoon when the light is good and the wind usually drops, then dinner in Grayton or along 30A.
Common Questions
Can I swim in the dune lake? The lakes are swimmable in general, but conditions vary and the Gulf is right there. Most people paddle the lake and swim in the Gulf.
