November is when the Gulf Coast gets quiet. Highs are around 70°F, the water has cooled into the mid-60s to around 70°F, and outside Thanksgiving week you can have long stretches of white sand nearly to yourself. It is not a swimming month for most people, but it is a very good beach month.
Quick Verdict
Go in November for walks, sunsets, fishing, cheap rentals, and a coast that feels like it belongs to the locals again. Skip it if your whole plan is long swims in warm water; for that, our Gulf Coast in October guide is the better fit. Early November is noticeably warmer than late November, so aim for the first half of the month if you can.

Weather and Water in November
Air Temperatures
The 1991–2020 climate normals put Pensacola's average November high at 71.8°F and its average low at 51.0°F (Florida Climate Center, using NOAA data). Mobile, just inland from Dauphin Island and Gulf Shores, averages a 70.2°F high and 47.7°F low (NOAA NCEI). Destin, 30A, and Panama City Beach run similar. In practice that means warm, sunny afternoons and evenings that call for a jacket, especially after a cold front.
Water Temperatures
NOAA's Coastal Water Temperature Guide lists average November water temperatures of about 66.6°F at Pensacola and 70.1°F at Panama City Beach, down from 75.7°F and 77.9°F in October. Alabama's beaches sit closer to the Pensacola number. Water near the shore drops quickly after a strong front, so the second half of the month usually runs cooler than the first.
Hurricane Season
Atlantic hurricane season officially runs through November 30, but storms this late are uncommon. Check the forecast the week before your trip and consider travel insurance if your dates are locked in.
Can You Swim in November?
You can, but most people find it bracing. Water in the upper 60s is a quick plunge for most adults and a wetsuit day for anyone planning to stay in. Kids often do not care. If swimming matters, choose the first week of November, a warm stretch between fronts, or a heated pool. Lifeguard coverage is reduced or seasonal on many beaches by now, so check the flag system and local beach rules before getting in.
Crowds and Prices
Outside Thanksgiving, November is one of the emptiest months of the year on the coast. Rental rates fall well below summer, and you can often book a Gulf-front condo a few weeks out. Thanksgiving week is the exception: families book whole condos for the holiday, so expect prices and traffic closer to a spring weekend and book early for those dates.
Thanksgiving Week on the Gulf Coast
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026. It's the one busy week of the month: families rent whole condos, restaurants book up for the holiday meal, and the weekend after Thanksgiving is when the coast switches over to Christmas. If you want a restaurant dinner on Thursday, reserve ahead and confirm the hours. Otherwise, a rental with a full kitchen is the easy way to cook the turkey yourself and still walk the beach afterward.
Destin & Sandestin
The Destin area is still recovering from Hurricane Isaias. As of Oct. 14, theDestin-Fort Walton Beach visitors bureau said power and essential services were widely restored but some service disruptions remained, so check with your rental and any restaurant before you go. The weekend before Thanksgiving, theVillage of Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin holds its ticketed Sparkling Wine & Holiday Lights evening (Saturday, Nov. 21, 4–6 p.m.), which ends with the village's Nights of Lights show.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 28),The Wharf lists a Small Business Saturday shopping day. - Destin — the harbor stays lively, fishing charters keep running, and Destin in November is far calmer than its summer self. Our best time to visit Destin guide compares the months.
- Seaside / 30A — walkable towns and bike paths make 30A one of the best places to enjoy a cool beach day.
- Dauphin Island — quiet, close to Mobile, and a good fall birding stop.
