Jacksonville to Destin is the drive that surprises Floridians. It is roughly 350 miles and around five and a half hours — longer than most people expect, because it crosses a time zone and most of the Panhandle. You end the trip an hour behind where you started.
It is worth it. The water on the Emerald Coast is a different color from the Atlantic, and there is no equivalent on Florida's east coast.
The Drive

The standard route is I-10 west almost the whole way, then south. It is an easy interstate drive with long empty stretches — cruise control country, not scenery.
Where to Stop
Tallahassee sits roughly at the two-and-a-half-hour mark and is the natural break — real food, real bathrooms, easy on and off I-10.
Marianna, further west, has Florida Caverns State Park a few minutes off the interstate — actual caves with guided tours, which is an unusually good leg-stretch if you have children losing patience.
Past that it thins out. Fuel up in Tallahassee or Marianna rather than trusting the gaps.
Which Beach to Book
From Jacksonville, the distance differences are small enough that you should choose on character rather than mileage.
Panama City Beach — the closest

Slightly closer than Destin and a completely different trip: small planned towns, bike paths, good food, no high-rises. It is the most distinctive stretch on the Panhandle and it suits couples and families who want quiet over amusements. Destin and Miramar — the default

A Weekend That Works
- Friday: leave Jacksonville by mid-afternoon, arrive early evening Central, eat near the condo
- Saturday: full beach day; boat trip or Crab Island if the weather holds
- Sunday: morning on the sand, leave by early afternoon Central to be home at a reasonable hour Eastern
Honestly, though: a long weekend is tight for this drive. Four nights is the point at which the eleven hours of round-trip driving stops feeling like most of the trip.
Flying Instead
You can fly Jacksonville to VPS (Destin–Fort Walton Beach) or ECP (Panama City), usually with a connection. For one or two people on a short trip it can pencil out. For a family of four with beach gear, driving wins on cost by a wide margin — and you want a car there anyway.
